AI Companion Startup Tolan Raises $30 Million as Active Users Top 250,000
TL;DR
- Tolan raised $30 million from investors including Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew.
- The round doubles its total funding to approximately $60 million, while its latest valuation remains undisclosed.
- The startup reports more than 250,000 active users and 70 million conversations over the past year.
- Subscription revenue has reached the “double-digit millions” in annual recurring revenue, according to the company.
Tolan Secures Fresh Funding for Its AI Companion
Tolan has raised another $30 million to expand its AI companion app, which helps users organize daily activities, discuss relationships and emotions, and work toward personal goals.
Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew participated in the round, according to Upstarts Media.
The investment doubles Tolan’s total funding to approximately $60 million and increases its valuation beyond the previous $120 million.
The company did not disclose its new valuation. PitchBook estimates it at more than $268 million with medium confidence, making that figure an external estimate rather than a confirmed funding-round valuation.
Cartoon Companion Combines Conversation With Practical Support
Users interact with Tolan through a cartoon-style character designed to provide conversational support and help them manage tasks.
The app combines discussions about everyday challenges with assistance organizing responsibilities and pursuing goals.
Tolan earns revenue through tiered memberships, with a subscription required for full access to its features. The company told Upstarts Media that annual recurring revenue has reached the double-digit millions, without providing a precise figure.
That recurring revenue offers evidence of paying demand, although the report does not disclose profitability, operating costs or subscriber retention.
Company Reports 70 Million Conversations in a Year
Tolan says it has more than 250,000 active users who have held over 70 million conversations during the past year.
According to the company, approximately 70% of users are women and 40% are parents.
Some users have also described the app as useful for neurodivergent people seeking help with organization or emotional support. Those accounts are anecdotal and do not establish clinical effectiveness.
The reported usage suggests Tolan has attracted a substantial audience in an AI companion market where commercial success has been uneven.
AI Agents Bring New Competitive Pressure
Tolan’s funding arrives as the boundary between conversational companions and task-oriented AI agents becomes less distinct.
Newer agents increasingly help users plan and complete activities, extending beyond discussing what they want to accomplish. That overlap could put pressure on companion apps to offer more practical functionality.
Meta’s Muse, for example, combines an AI agent with an avatar and is expected to expand into hardware, according to reporting cited in the article.
Other companion businesses have faced difficulties. Friend’s wearable attracted significant public criticism, while Character.AI recently filed for bankruptcy and agreed to sell selected assets to Disney.
Those contrasting outcomes underscore the challenge of turning interest in AI companionship into a durable business.
Emotional Support Features Carry Safety Responsibilities
Tolan must also navigate the risks of offering AI-powered emotional support.
Lawsuits against other chatbot developers have alleged that interactions contributed to users’ deaths by suicide. Those allegations concern separate companies and should not be treated as findings about Tolan.
Nevertheless, they highlight the scrutiny facing services that encourage users to discuss sensitive personal matters.
The fresh funding gives Tolan additional resources to develop its product. Its longer-term prospects will depend on sustaining paid demand, competing with increasingly capable agents and managing the responsibilities that come with emotionally supportive conversations.
