Volkswagen to Invest up to a Billion Euros in AI by End of Decade

Volkswagen announced on Tuesday that it will invest up to €1 billion ($1.2 billion) in artificial intelligence by 2030, aiming to integrate the technology across its operations to generate billions in savings.

The German carmaker revealed the plan at the IAA car show in Munich, where European automakers are showcasing new electric vehicles and tech innovations to counter growing competition from China.

According to Volkswagen, the investment will focus on AI-driven vehicle development, industrial applications, and strengthening high-performance IT infrastructure. The company expects the initiative to deliver up to €4 billion in savings by 2035.

The group is undergoing significant restructuring in its key markets of Germany and China, with new model launches and cost-cutting efforts underway. On Sunday, Volkswagen unveiled the ID.CROSS, a concept for a compact electric SUV designed to expand its lineup of affordable EVs.

“AI is the key to greater speed, quality, and competitiveness along the entire value chain, from vehicle development to production,” said Hauke Stars, Volkswagen’s chief IT officer.
