Google Unveils Gemini-Powered Home Speaker to Revive Smart Audio Devices
Google Launches Gemini-Powered Home Speaker With Advanced AI Conversations
Google on Wednesday introduced the Google Home Speaker, a new smart speaker built around its Gemini artificial intelligence platform. Priced at $99.99, the device marks Google's first standalone smart speaker release since the Nest Audio debuted in September 2020.
The launch represents Google's effort to redefine the role of smart speakers by moving beyond simple voice commands and smart home controls toward more natural, AI-driven interactions.
Gemini Brings Natural Conversations to Smart Homes
Unlike earlier generations of smart speakers that relied on rigid command structures, the new Google Home Speaker allows users to communicate using natural language and more complex requests.
Users can issue multi-step commands such as turning off specific lights while leaving others on, adjusting lighting, playing music, and setting timers in a single request. Gemini can also understand corrections made during a conversation without requiring users to start over.
For example, a user can change a command mid-sentence, and the AI will interpret the revised instruction correctly, creating a more conversational experience.
New Voices and Follow-Up Conversations
The speaker launches with 10 new voice options and supports two-way conversations that extend beyond traditional smart home tasks.
Users can ask questions, explore topics in greater depth, and engage with Gemini similarly to how they would interact with the AI assistant on a smartphone.
Google has also expanded its Continued Conversation feature, allowing users to ask follow-up questions without repeatedly using the wake phrase. After responding, the device’s microphone remains active briefly to support a more natural flow of conversation.
Familiar Design With New AI Indicators
The Google Home Speaker retains a design language similar to previous models, featuring a rounded form factor wrapped in a 3D-knit textile finish.
The device measures 3.4 by 4.2 inches and will be available in multiple color options. U.S. customers can choose from Jade, Berry, Hazel, and Porcelain finishes, while international markets will receive Hazel and Porcelain variants.
A new illuminated ring at the base of the speaker provides visual feedback, indicating whether the device is listening, processing a request, or responding.
Premium AI Features Behind a Subscription
While many Gemini capabilities are included with the device, Google is introducing a new Home Premium subscription tier for users seeking advanced AI functionality.
The subscription costs $10 per month or $100 annually and unlocks features such as Gemini Live conversations, which allow for more fluid and open-ended interactions with the assistant.
Premium subscribers will also gain access to enhanced Nest camera intelligence, enabling Gemini to analyze and summarize activity detected by connected home security cameras. The service can provide overviews of events that occurred while users were away from home.
To encourage adoption, Google is offering six months of Home Premium at no additional cost with the purchase of the speaker.
Google's Push to Monetize AI Hardware
The launch highlights Google's broader strategy of integrating Gemini across its hardware ecosystem while creating subscription-based revenue opportunities around advanced AI experiences.
By combining affordable hardware with premium AI services, Google hopes to revitalize the smart speaker category and demonstrate how generative AI can enhance everyday home interactions.
The Google Home Speaker is available for preorder immediately and is scheduled to begin shipping later this month.
