Apple Signs Hiring and Technology Licensing Deal With AI Audio Startup Huxe

TL;DR

  • Apple agreed to offer jobs to certain Huxe AI employees and license the startup’s technology.

  • The deal includes a non-exclusive intellectual property license rather than an outright acquisition.

  • Huxe was founded by developers who previously worked on NotebookLM’s AI-generated podcast features.

  • The startup announced its shutdown on May 21, and Apple notified the European Commission of the agreement on June 9.

Apple has reached an agreement to recruit employees and license technology from personalized audio startup Huxe, according to a regulatory disclosure to the European Commission.

The arrangement, first reported by MacRumors, gives Apple access to talent and intellectual property from the startup without acquiring the company outright.

It follows Huxe’s announcement earlier this year that it would shut down its app and stop developing the product.

Apple Agrees to Employment Offers and a Non-Exclusive License

Apple’s filing says it agreed to make employment offers to certain Huxe AI employees and receive a non-exclusive license to the company’s intellectual property rights.

The disclosure does not identify the employees, confirm whether they accepted the offers or reveal the financial terms.

Apple also provided no details about how it intends to use the technology.

The structure is commonly described as a reverse acqui-hire, in which a larger company recruits startup staff and licenses technology while leaving the corporate entity outside the transaction.

Huxe Team Had Experience Building AI Podcasts

Huxe was founded by developers who previously worked on the AI-generated podcast features in Google’s NotebookLM, which was recently renamed Gemini Notebook.

The startup focused on personalized audio, placing it within a growing category of tools that use AI to generate listening experiences tailored to individual users.

That background could bring Apple additional expertise in AI audio generation, although the filing does not connect the agreement to a specific Apple service.

Agreement Followed Huxe’s Shutdown Announcement

Huxe announced on May 21 that it was ending development and shutting down its service.

The company said it would remove its app from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store, halt service and delete user data. Its farewell message thanked users for their feedback, suggestions and support.

Apple notified the European Commission of the hiring and licensing agreement on June 9, shortly after that announcement.

The sequence establishes that the disclosure followed Huxe’s shutdown plans, but it does not explain when negotiations began or what prompted the startup to close.

Apple’s Plans for the Technology Remain Undisclosed

The agreement raises the possibility that Apple could introduce personalized AI audio features, potentially within its Podcasts app. However, Apple has not announced such plans.

Spotify unveiled AI-powered podcast generation features a day before Huxe announced its shutdown, highlighting wider interest in the format.

For now, Apple’s filing confirms an agreement involving employment offers and technology licensing. Whether that leads to a new consumer audio product remains unclear.
