OpenAI Reportedly Seeks $30 Billion Funding Round at $1.25 Trillion Valuation
TL;DR
- OpenAI is reportedly negotiating a private funding round of up to $30 billion.
- CNBC reported a proposed $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation.
- Coatue and UAE investors are expected to lead the financing.
OpenAI Pursues Another Major Private Raise
OpenAI is reportedly working to raise up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, potentially securing another substantial injection of private capital ahead of a public listing.
According to CNBC, which cited people familiar with the discussions, Coatue and investors in the United Arab Emirates are leading the proposed round.
The terms remain under negotiation and could change. OpenAI declined to comment.
If completed at the reported valuation, the financing would place OpenAI above the $1 trillion mark before the new investment, potentially making it the most valuable private company on record.
UAE Investment Could Include Computing Agreement
The proposed financing could also be accompanied by an agreement to provide OpenAI with additional computing capacity from the UAE, CNBC reported.
Such an arrangement would connect the fundraising with access to infrastructure needed to develop and operate its AI systems.
The latest report follows Bloomberg’s account last month that OpenAI was discussing a $30 billion raise at a $1.4 trillion valuation. The differing figures reflect ongoing negotiations, and the reports do not establish that both valuations were calculated on the same basis.
Neither the financing nor a related computing agreement has been announced as finalized.
Private Funding Talks Follow Confidential IPO Filing
OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an initial public offering in June, following a March financing that valued the ChatGPT developer at $852 billion post-money.
The proposed new round would establish a higher valuation benchmark before any public debut. However, the fundraising discussions do not themselves confirm that OpenAI has canceled or formally delayed its IPO.
A pre-money valuation measures the company’s value before fresh capital is added, while a post-money figure includes the new investment. That distinction matters when comparing the proposed round with earlier financing.
Anthropic Also Pursues a Potential Public Listing
OpenAI’s negotiations come as rival Anthropic prepares for its own potential IPO.
CNBC reported that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its public debut. Those figures remain reported targets rather than an established market valuation.
Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May and filed confidential IPO paperwork in June.
The parallel fundraising and listing efforts highlight the scale of investor commitments being sought by leading AI developers. For both companies, final financing terms and public-market appetite will determine whether those valuation ambitions are realized.
